4WD Durville Island Marlborough High Country Tag-along Tour


Bring your own 4WD to explore two historic Awatere Valley stations and D’Urville Island on this new 4WD adventure. Stay on a Waihopai Valley high country station for two nights to drive on the farm tracks and see the historic Musterers huts and enjoy the farm hospitality. Drive from the top of the Richmond Ranges to the outer Marlborough Sounds to catch a barge for a very special experience to drive on D’Urville Island.

ITINERARY

Day 1

8.30 Arrive Blenheim Railway Station.  We make our way to the Awatere Valley via the Taylor Pass. We then drive through two historic stations taking us to the Waihopai Valley. Along the way we stop for morning tea at an historic hut and lunch beside a creek. We proceed to our accommodation in the Waihopai Valley on a Station. Here we stay for two nights.  Geoff’s getting the apron out tonight for a tasty BBQ dinner. 

Day 2

All day today we are driving two exciting 4WD tracks in the Back country of the Waihopai Valley. The farmer will be accompanying us on our tour through his property giving us the history and
stories. Lots of amazing views and having morning tea in a historic high country hut.   After this stunning day we will have dinner in the homestead tonight with the owners, enjoying a lovely roast dinner. 

Day 3 

8.30 Depart. We drive down Waihopai Valley and onto the Richmond Ranges past Lake Chalice and onto a carpark for morning tea overlooking the Wairau Valley. We then proceed to the Rai Valley Township and stop for lunch at the bakery, best pies ever! After lunch we drive to French Pass to meet the Barge to transport us to Kapowai Bay, D’Urville Island.  We then drive 40 minutes to Catherine Cove mid-afternoon. We stay for two nights at the Wilderness Lodge, the accommodation is modern styled cabins with ensuite bathrooms. Dinner at 7.00pm at the lodge tonight. 

Day 4

9:00am Drive in convoy over D’Urville Island on a guided tour, learn about the rich history from Maori occupation to European settlement. Our guide for the morning is a descendant of
the local iwi and will give us a commentary from the lead vehicle as you drive over this amazing island. Enjoy morning tea and lunch at scenic spots with amazing views before arriving back to Catherine Cove in time for our Fishing Charter to catch our own dinner tonight. 

Day 5

Depart 9:00am from our accommodation to meet the Barge to transport us back to The French Pass. Enjoy the outer Marlborough Sounds views towards Golden Bay on the drive through to Havelock Township for lunch.
